Students spend time learning about slime

Thermo Fisher Scientific encourages its colleagues to participate in STEM education outreach in their local communities. Science classes at Holman Middle School had employees from the manufacturing plant in Berkeley visit and lead a STEM-based project with students on Nov. 17.

“It was really fun and I learned a bunch of new vocabulary words,” seventh grader Esmeralda Vargas said.

One word was oobleck which is a fictional green substance in a Dr. Seuss book.

“It’s a solid but a liquid at the same time,” Vargas said. “It’s basically slime, and that’s what we made.”

The students learned about the chemistry of slime using three key ingredients: liquid glue, baking soda and contact lens solution.

Students in Teresa Hutti and Matt Parker’s science classes participated in the lesson with Thermo Fisher Scientific professionals about a week after National STEAM/STEM Day was celebrated on Nov. 8.
