Willow Brook team wins Elementary Book Battle

Students from Pattonville’s elementary schools and Remington Traditional School participated in the annual Districtwide Elementary Mark Twain Book Battle today at the Learning Center. The two teams from Willow Brook Elementary claimed first and second place and a team from Bridgeway Elementary finished in third.

The book battle is a trivia-type competition hosted by Pattonville's school library technology specialists. During the event, teams of students compete on their knowledge of a predesignated list of books.

Team members from Willow Brook Elementary said Omolola Ogunmola was the “heart and soul of our team.”

“Everybody contributed to the game because everybody gave an answer,” Ogunmola said. “I read all the books, but that also makes it a little harder because you have to remember which book is which. My teammates focused on and read their own books, and they know their books really well, so I would say that they worked just as hard as me.”

Library technology specialist Jennifer Bober who is set to retire at the end of the school year is going out a champion after never finishing higher than tied for third place in past events.

“The students that participated read the Mark Twain Award Nominees and came in after their lunch recess and we practiced a lot doing trivia questions like what they did today,” she said. “They worked really hard and a lot of them read all the books and I think that makes a big difference.”

Between rounds, the students were able to Zoom with author Jennifer Camiccia, author of “The Memory Keeper” which is a 2021-2022 Mark Twain Award Nominee, and ask her questions about writing.

Pattonville Heights Middle School will be hosting the Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle on May 4.
