Drummond third graders share animal research presentations

Spiders, Bearded Dragons and Dolphins! Oh my!

Students in Samantha Shyken’s third grade class at Drummond Elementary School shared their animal research presentations during a project showcase.

“We did informative writing and I wanted to make it fun for them,” Shyken said. “I also wanted them to practice presentation skills and get the chance to share in front of their peers.”

Third grader Ian Lindsey chose to learn more about axolotls and presented his project to his classmates and two sections of kindergarteners.

“Axolotls are a type of salamander that actually eat each other,” he said.

Shyken noticed a lot of ownership in the assignment that required them to learn about an animal’s appearance, diet, habitat and other fun facts.

“They care a lot more about what they're doing because they got to choose their animal,” she said. “They were in charge of their own learning and I invited other classes to sign up to attend the presentations.”

Heather Klein, the school’s district technology specialist, helped teach students how to use Google Slides and provided a template for students to add text and pictures.

“We worked on writing different paragraphs and we worked on text features and research,” Shyken said. “We hit a bunch of different skills with this project that they seemed to really enjoy.”
